What is freediving?
Freediving is the practice of holding your breath while underwater without the use of breathing equipment, such as a scuba tank. For some, freediving is a way of life, for others a competitive sport, and for many a hobby.
People practice freediving recreationally for many reasons: to challenge themselves physically and mentally, to take beautiful underwater photos, to improve their mental health, to explore the underwater world, or to improve their physical fitness. The reasons are endless. But most freedivers will mention the feeling of peace and calm they experience when freediving, and how they use it as a form of meditation and to feel deeply connected to the sea.
Explore
Freediving can allow you to explore the ocean in a more intimate way. Scuba divers are limited in their vertical movements, meaning that if they want to follow a sea turtle, they can’t if the turtle swims too far above or below them due to the excess nitrogen they breathe from the compressed gas. Freedivers aren’t limited by this and are free to swim as they please as long as they can hold their breath. They also don’t have the burden of tanks and heavy equipment, making freediving less stressful on their bodies and giving them a near-zero-gravity experience.
Freediving is also an activity people use for self-exploration. Self-awareness is an important part of the sport, and freedivers constantly challenge themselves mentally and embark on a journey into their own minds with each dive.
Trust in water
Freediving courses and training maintain a strong focus on safety. Freediving makes you aware of your own behavior in the water, how to detect signs of trouble, and teaches you how to behave in rescue scenarios. Increased confidence in the water is beneficial for everyone, especially if you are able to help someone in distress.
Lifestyle
People who make freediving their lifestyle can make several lifestyle changes. If they are smokers, they may reduce or even quit smoking, decrease their alcohol consumption, change their diet, and take up meditation, yoga, or other forms of cross-training. They also typically become more environmentally conscious and may develop an interest in ocean conservation once they realize how vital the oceans are to the world. There are many positive lifestyle changes that can result from incorporating freediving into your daily life.
